Wound
|
|
Spotted lame on the right fore limb. Examination
revealed a septic wound at fetlock posteriorly and was exuding creamy pus
mixed with fresh blood. This was as a result of faulty snare. Hoof on the
same limb had overgrown. Hoof was trimmed using hoof cutter and filed using
hoof rasp. 100mgs Ivermectin was administered subcutaneously.
|
Immobilized using 7mgs Etorphine and 60mgs
Azaperone. Wound was cleaned with 100ml Hydrogen Peroxide, rinsed with 50ml
Iodine, sprayed with 50ml Tetracycline wound spray. 20ml healing oil was

Wound
|
|
Was isolated due to severe lameness on the right
hind limb at fetlock joint which was due to traumatic wound suspected to have
been caused by faulty snare. It was bleeding due to ambulation. 20cc
Pyrethrin was applied as pour-on acaricide and 100mgs Ivermectin injected
subcutaneously
|
Darted using etorphine 7mgs and 60mgs Azaperone
mixture. 100ml Hydrogen peroxide followed by 50ml Iodine was used to clean
the wound. 50ml Tetracycline Wound spray and 50ml healing oil was topically
applied one after the other. 15000mgs Amoxicillin was injected
intramuscularly. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Black Rhino-Male ID No. 44
|
Emaciation
|
|
Reported to be weak occasioned by poor body score.
Examination shown that it was highly emaciated and had several natural
wounds. He was alert and ambulating well though slow. It was feeding but did
not have normal aggressiveness.
|
The same candidate had been treated in November 2013
for fight wounds. There was no obvious indicator warranting darting and also
his condition disqualified him from darting adventure. It was recommended
that he be monitored for seven days after which review will be done.

Snare
|
|
Was reported as having been ‘tethered’ around a
strong tree. Examination revealed that
it had been snared around neck using a wedge wire about seven meters long.
The snoop was tight causing severe strangulation. This led to bloat which was
made worsened by advanced pregnancy.
She was very aggressive
|
It was darted using 12mgs Etorphine and 180mgs
Azaperone. Unfortunately she went down on a very tight snare which caused
fatal strangulation before it was severed using wire cutter.

|
Deaths Surveillance
|
|
A response was made to a report that many hippos
around Lake Naivasha were dying following massive fencing resulting to scarce
forage. Areas visited were along Moi North lake road. Only one death was
reported at Marula Estate but was the carcass was highly decomposed.
|
In Manera there was another carcass which was found
in a trapping whole along Manera-Lower KARI border. This matter was handed
over to Investigation team at Naivasha Station for action as it indicated
poaching activities

Zebra foal-Male
|
Congenital deformities
|
Noted spending most of the time lying down. When
examined closely it was established that it had congenital deformities affecting
both hind limbs. The left had hock joint deflexion medially crossing over to
the right side and fetlock had posterior deflexion. The right had fetlock
Knuckling.
|
The degree of deformity was severe making ambulation
difficult and subjected the foal to unnecessary duress. To overcome all the
shortcomings, it was euthanized using 400mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone
intracardially

Waterbuck-Female
|
Snare
|
|
Was noted shaking head constantly. This was caused
by a strangulating plain wire snare around the neck. It had resulted to
septic traumatic wound with creamy tenacious pus and Scab formation
|
Darted using 8mgs Etorphine and 80mgs Azaperone.
Wound was liberally cleaned with 100cc Hydrogen Peroxide, then 100cc Iodine.
It was sprayed with 50cc Tetracycline wound spray and smeared with 50cc
Healing Oil. 7500mgs of Penicillin was injected intramuscularly. It was
reversed with 75mgs Naltrexone intravenously.

White Rhino-Male named Joe
|
Postmortem
|
|
It was discovered in the morning after a night of
gunshots. It was found on right lateral recumbence. Two projectile entries
were found on the left metacarpal and above the left eye.
|
An exit point was found on the metacarpal joint
posteriorly for the former and the latter track was followed to the left frontal
bone, left neck muscles up to left humerus neck where it settled completely
fracturing the humeral neck. The animal died of circulatory shock following
rupture of left brachial plexus.

Black Rhino- ID No. 44
|
Postmortem
|
|
It died while under monitoring following wasting
syndrome. It was found on sternal recumbence. A swelling was noted on right
neck muscles. Between the swelling and cervical vertebrae was a bullet head.
The swelling was believed to have been pus which hardened to form muscle like
tissue. This showed that it was a long standing condition.
|
The carcass was screened for any metallic foreign material
using metal detector. A total of seven bullet heads were retrieved from the
carcass. Five within neck muscles and two within stomach region. It died of
massive organ failure since the liver was covered with fibrin, pericardial
sac and ventral colon were ruptured.

Fracture
|
|
Reported lame on the left front limb. The said limb
had a lateral deflexon at the level of metacarpal joint making ambulation
painful resulting to constant periods of lying down. The injury was suspected
to have been caused faulty snare
|
Was darted using 7mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone.
Due to seriousness of the injury it was put down using 400mgs Sodium
Pentobarbitone intravenously to avoid unnecessary suffering.

Construction of Holding Boma
|
Preparation of release
|
|
Constructed boma to hold the different species which
were meant to be translocated to Ndere Island from Naivasha area.
|
The targeted animals were zebras, waterbuck, warthogs
and impalas. These were meant to complete the tourist western circuit.

18 Zebras-5 males, 13 females
|
Capture and Translocation
|
|
Capture was effected by use of chemicals and manual
loading of the immobilized zebras into transporting crate loaded on truck
where they were revived and separated in two compartments. Two zebras were
desnared in the process and one was released after treatment of dermal
swellings. One female zebra died immediately after intravenous darting.
|
Each was immobilized using 6mgs for adults and 5mgs
for sub adult Etorphine and 80 or 60mgs Azaperone respectively. 500I.U of Hylase
was included to shorten knock down time. Each was revived using 24 mgs
Diprenorphine intravenously and 15mgs Naltrexone intramuscularly

Release
|
|
They were released at late night into the holding
boma to rest awaiting transit over water the following morning to Ndere
Island
|
Two broke out of boma and were darted using 5mgs
Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. They were taken back into boma and revived
using 24mgs Diprenorphine.
