Snare
|
Spotted with plain wire snare around the neck
dropping down about three meters. It had caused trauma on the tail resulting
to granulating wound on entire tail. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide
and Iodine. Tetracycline wound spray and healing oil was topically applied.

Was immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 60mgs
Azaperone. 15000mgs Amoxycillin was injected intramuscularly and 20mgs
Ivermectin injected subcutaneously. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine
intravenously

|
Carcass was discovered within thick bush area. It
was discovered four days after conclusion of notching exercise. This
particular sub-adult rhino was a notching candidate. It was about 2 years old
and had been darted during notching exercise but went missing after getting
into thick bush.

On examination only a small piece of skin was found
with few pieces of bones. The two horns had been recovered by rhino team the
previous day and were in safe custody. It had been predated on by hyenas that
were found within the area. It was suspected to be the candidate who had gone
missing during the notching exercise. Tentative cause of death was
complications post darting

Traumatic Wound
|
Noted lame on the right hind limb. On close
examination it had a torn deep digital ligament possibly due to faulty snare.
The wound was at right hind metatarsus about two weeks old and was covered
with scabs and blood due to flexion while ambulating
|
Was darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone.
It was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Tetracycline wound spray
was applied and healing oil topically. Long acting Tetracycline 30000mgs was
injected intramuscularly. It was revived using 35mgs Naltrexone
intravenously.

Cancerous Swelling
|
Had a big wounded and bleeding swelling on the base
of each ear ventrolaterally causing the ears to drop obliterating the sight.
She kept on flapping ears and shaking the head resulting into pronounced
bleeding. Tissue samples of the swellings were preserved in obsolete Ethanol.

Having made the decision to euthanize it, it was
immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 40mgs Medetomidine. It was euthanized
using 400mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone into Jugular vein

Spine kyphosis
|
Noted ambulating with both hind limbs ligid and
stalked under the body. The spine assumed bow-like structure. After darting,
it was massaged thoroughly at both hip joints with aim of relaxing the
joints. Anatomically integrity of the two limbs was normal.

Immobilization was achieved by use of 6mgs Etorphine
and 60mgs Azaperone. Dexamethasone 100mgs was injected intramuscularly and
20mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously. Pyrethrin 100ml acaricide was topically
applied. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Postmortem
|
The two carcasses were about thirty meters apart and
both on left lateral recumbence. Both appeared to be more than ten days old.
They had decomposed heavily. Only ears and part of lower limbs had been
predated on. All four horns had precisely been excised from their position.
Forensic samples were carefully picked.

Soft tissues had turned to thick fluid. Skin plus
toe hooves were sloughing off upon touch. Maggots of all generations had
heavily invaded the two carcasses. Tentative cause of death was not
immediately established but due to lack of all four trophies human
involvement was linked with the deaths.

Fallen in the water reservoir
|
The sub-adult buffalo was suspected to have fallen
over night into the water reservoir while they grazed on the edge. It was
totally submerged and swimming around with head above the water. It was
almost exhausted as it was less active.

Quickly the neck was roped and two ends of rope held
by two people. It was directed to the entrance canal and pulled out. It
remained in sternal recumbence breathing and shaking heavily. It was urged to
get up which it did and had no injury all fracture. It was left quietly to
relax and get away on its own. The administration was advised to secure the
water reservoir with appropriate repulsive fence

Was spotted lame on left hind limb with scratch
marks on the metatarsus. The injury could have been caused by faulty snare.
On examination the scratched shin was found to be sore

Was chased and roped after darting with 20mgs
Etorphine and 80mgs Xylazine. Flunixin Meglumine 100mgs and 15000mgs
Penicillin were injected intramuscularly and 50mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously.
It was revived immediately after being roped using 5mgs Atipamezole and 60mgs
Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

meter. The snare was barely tight causing irritation and uneasiness. There
was no resultant wound

applied topically. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine into vein

|
Was found on right lateral recumbence. There was no
injury superficially. The mucus membranes were dry and pale with sunken eyes.
Skin was not pliable.

On opening mucus membranes were pale and dry.
Glandular stomach and intestines were devoid of any content. The tentative
cause of death was hunger/hypoglycemia which could have arisen from failure
to suckle.

|
Depicted severe lameness of the right hind limb. It
had a plain wire snare embedded at the metatarsus causing infected and
bleeding wound which was more than a week old. It was chased and roped after
five minutes post darting after showing star gazing signs. It was casted on
left lateral recumbence. It remained casted down manually till the end of
treatment administration.

Darted with 10mgs Etorphine and 5omgs Xylazine. The
first dart of 12mgs etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine was faulty because it was
subcutaneous. The wound was cleaned with hydrogen peroxide and rinsed with
Iodine. All granulating debris was removed. Tetracycline wound spray was
topically applied followed by healing oil. It was revived using 5mgs
Atipamezole and 30mgs Diprenorphine immediately after casting. Tetracycline
30000mgs was injected into muscles

Was reported to have invaded tourism facility within
the lodge causing panic and despair. Was captured manually while resting on
stones at loading bay.

It was transported in nylon sacs awaiting release.

Was spotted with swinging leg lameness. The left
metatarsus was completely broken exposing pieces of bones (comminuted
fracture). Scratch marks were visible on examination especially on the
lateral side of left hind limb.

Was euthanized using 400mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone

|
Was found dead on left lateral recumbence. On close
examination the carcass was about four days old had been invaded by safari
ants and maggots. It was emaciated and depicted diarrhea post death.

The same location had experienced enteritis of the
impalas with some deaths which stopped with culmination of long rains. Patrol
within the area depicted healthy impalas but Surveillance continues so that
any recurrence can be investigated in time.

Noted lying down. When urged to move it depicted
swinging leg lameness due to tight traumatic plain snare wire around the
right metatarsus being drugged about two meters. The snare was embedded
causing infected and bleeding wound which was about a week old.

Was immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs
Azaperone. The tight snare was severed using wire cutter. Wound was cleaned
using Hydrogen Peroxide and iodine. Tetracycline wound spray was liberally
applied topically followed by healing oil. 30000mgs of Long acting
tetracycline was injected into muscles. It was revived using 24mgs
Diprenorphine into jugular vein

released and the site was identified at Hells Gate National Park.

Before release its’ measurements were taken. It
weighed 21kgs and was 11 feet long. It slipped away to the nearby thickets

Noted with a tight four braided plain wire snare
around the neck causing traumatic wound on the neck dorsally and ventrally.
The snare was more than two weeks old causing emaciation on the subject.

Immobilized using 10mgs Etorphine and 200mgs
Azaperone. The wire was severed using wire cutter. Traumatic wound was
cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and iodine. Tetracycline wound spray and
healing oil was applied topically. 20mgs Ivermectine was injected
subcutaneously and Pyrethrine acaricide applied topically along the spine

|
Spotted with snare wire around the neck dropping
down entangling the both hind limbs causing friction wounds on both
metacarpus and metatarsus plus the neck dorsally. Ambulation was being
impended by the wire. These wounds were more than two weeks old. They were
covered with scabs, granulating debris and fresh blood.

Was darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine.
All wounds were cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Tetracycline
wound spray and healing oil was topically applied. 7500mgs long acting
Tetracycline was injected intramuscularly and 9mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously.
It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine and 2.5mgs Atipamezole into the
jugular vein.

|
Was noted lame due to traumatic wound on the left
hind limb metatarsus. On examination the deep digital flexor tendon had been
severed possibly by snare which self-released. The wound was about two weeks
old.

Darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. The
wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and iodine. Tetracycline wound spray
and healing oil was liberally applied. Long acting 12000mgs Tetracycline was
injected intramuscularly. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine and 2.5mgs
Atipamezole intravenously.
