Postmortem

Was found dead near the live fence. The death was caused by straining to get out of the snare which had snared the left hind fetlock. The wedge snare wire was hooked on a piece of wood which was deeply fixed in earth to act as anchor.

Orphan

Reported to have spent a lot of time seeking attention from dam. No dam was seen interested with suckling it. It was verified that it had been separated from the dam. The dam is thought to have been poached for game meat or probably gotten stuck in the mud on shore of lake Naivasha.
By the time it was visited it was seen trying to nib grass and accompanying a herd where one dam seemed to pay some care and attention to the calf. Monitoring will be continued to make sure that he keeps with the pace of the herd. If otherwise he will be rescued and taken to an orphanage facility.

Snare

 Spotted with wedge snare wire around the left hind limb causing severe traumatic wound. Wound was bleeding, maggot infested and granulating. Wire was severed using wire cutter. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Was smeared with Healing Oil and sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray. 200ml Pyrethrin pour on was applied topically
Darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. Was injected with 15000mgs Tetracycline, 50ml Multivitamin intramuscular and 80mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein

Snare

Reported having a snare wire around the neck which was barely tight. The snoop was loosened and taken of the neck. Abrasions on the hind limbs were sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray liberally
Immobilized with 5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Capture and translocation

Were spotted within the poachers ridden location and need to rescue him was paramount. They were moved into Kigio Wildlife Conservancy which is safe habitat
Dam was darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone while foal was darted with 3mgs and 40mgs respectively. Dam was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine and foal with 75mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein.

Meeting

A meeting on status of snaring was held with Mr. Saina-Head security and Human Resource, Chief Security Supervisor Mr. Kimathi, 2 fence attendants and Naivasha Mobile Vet Unit Personnel. This was after snaring status escalated.
It was agreed that the two fence attendants should every day give fence status since fence fenestries were the snaring points. Supervisor was directed to beep up his supervisory role and establish where the wedge wire is coming from giving extra attention to greenhouse maintenance team. The administration was urged to maintain the fence failure to which it will be graded down to eliminate fenestries.

Snare

Seen limping on the left fore limb. Examination revealed a wedge wire snare around the fetlock joint being drugged about two meters. Had caused severe scabbing bleeding maggot infested wound about ten days old. It was loosened and taken off. Wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine, healing Oil and Tetracycline wound spray was smeared on the wound.
Darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. Dart wound was infiltrated with Opticlox cream, 15000mgs Tetracycline, 100ml Multivitamin was injected into the muscles followed by 80mgs Ivermectin under the skin. It was revived by 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Poor health-Lassitude

The two were spotted emaciated and one with several nodules exuding creamy pus when pressed. Youngest one was boosted with 25ml Multivitamin, 3000mgs Tetracycline intramuscular and 30mgs Ivermectin While the Old was covered with twice the above.
Each was restrained manually after being separated from the rest of the herd. Each was covered with 150ml Pyrethrin topically

Snare-Right hind

Spotted severely lame on right hind limb with a wedge wire on the fetlock area causing extensive traumatic wound. It was severed using wire cutter and wound cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. It was smeared with 80mgs Ivermectin, Healing Oil and finally with Tetracycline wound spray.
Immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 6omgs Xylazine. It was injected with 50ml Multivitamin and 15000mgs Tetracycline into muscles and 80mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously. 150ml Pyrethrin pour on was applied topically. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine and 31.25mgs Yohimbine into jugular vein.

White Rhino-Male, David
Traumatic Injury

Reported limping on right hind limp. Examination after washing off the mud ridden limb revealed that it had hit a blunt object using the right knee causing skin bruise. Ambulation was slightly affected. It was injected with 100mgs Dexamethasone. It was confirmed that it had seen wooing a female to mate but later chased away by another bull that displaced him.
Darted using 4.5mgs Etorphine and 80mgs Azaperone. Anesthesia plane was lightened up using 10mgs Butorphanol into ear vein immediately it went down. It was revived using 150mgs Naltrexone and into ear vein and 24mgs Diprenorphine into neck muscles. It woke up after seven minutes and walked about 10meters then laid down to rest but aware of the surroundings.

Postmortem

Was found trapped by the fence wire which entangled the right hind limb at lower metatarsus. It was hanged upside down over night resulting to death.

Snare




Reported with snare around the neck and right armpit. Had caused friction wound at the armpit. The wire was severed using wire cutter and wound sprayed with Hydrogen Peroxide. It was injected with 30000mgs Amoxicilin into muscles
Darted with 10mgs Etorphine and 100mgs Azaperone. It was revived using 36mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Postmortem

Seen floating on lagoon water. Had decomposed and smelly. It was thought to have plunged into the irrigation lagoon and suffocated. It was retrieved using hook and rope.
The administration was instructed to mend the chain link spaces where it was thought to have entered through to the lagoon area.

Traumatic wound

Had been attacked by suspected Hyenas. Its tail and part of sacrum was severed together with upper perineum. Due to extent of the injury it was prognosed as poor
Darted using 3mgs Etorphine and 40mgs Azaperone. It was euthanized using 200mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone into jugular vein

Snare

Reported with a wedge snare wire on the neck dropping down to the hind limbs where it had caused friction wounds on fetlocks. It was loosened and taken off the neck. Wounds were sprayed with tetracycline wound spray.
Was darted with 6mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone.. It was quickly loaded into a pick up and taken into Kigio Wildlife Conservancy where its security is guaranteed. It was revived using 75mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein

White Rhino-Male/Sarova
Territorial Fight.

Reported limping on the left hind limb and depicting fight marks on the fore head. Examination revealed that the limping limb had two superficial skin abrasions. It had several skin tares on fore head between 9cms deep and 3cms full of pus. They were cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Tetracycline wound spray and healing Oil was liberally applied.
Immobilized with 4.5mgs Etorphine and 70mgs Azaperone. It was injected with 15000mgs Tetracycline, 2500mgs Flunixin Meglumine and 100mls Multivitamin into muscles at different locations. It was notched and split fore horn trimmed at base of split. It was revived using 10mgs Butorphanol mixed with 30mgs Dopram first followed by 30mgs Diprenorphine into ear vein. 24mgs of Diprenorphine was injected into muscles. It was fully awake in four minutes.

Stray

They were reported to have invaded Moi North Lake road interfering with smooth traffic flow. Two broke and got into the thick bushes, 1 went through the fence into Hindu Farm while 2 were darted and put in Crater Lake through the electric fence.
2 darted each with 10mgs Etorphine and 90mgs Azaperone. Temperature was controlled by dowsing liberally with water. Each was revived using 20mgs Naltrexone mixed with 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein

Stray

Reported to have invaded residential area at Green Park and was chasing workers. Was darted and transported using tractor trailer to Marura Estate corridor where it was released
Darted with 10mgs Etorphine and 100mgs Azaperone. Was revived using 30mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Capture & Translocation

Had been fenced out near community area. They turned out to be problematic by raiding community farms resulting to Human-Wildlife conflict. They had to be moved to fenced area of the same farm to counter conflict
Adults were darted with 8mgs and 60mgs Azaperone, sub adults with 5 and 40 while juveniles with 3 and 20. Chopper darting was done. Each was lifted by crane truck, loaded into canter or truck and taken to fenced area where it was off loaded and revived with 24mgs or 12mgs Diprenorphine.

Postmortem-Euthanized

Having been treated on 16/7/14 as above, it was again attacked and fought back. It was fought resulting to new inuries on the face and chip fracture on the left hind femur at distal end posteriorly.
Was found unable to stand but alert. It was immobilized with 4mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Xylazine. It was euthanized using 6000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone into ear vein.

Cancerous Wound

Reported lame on the right fore limb occasioned by raw bleeding wound. It was examined and appeared cancerous riddled with foul smell.
Darted using 10mgs Etorphine and 100mgs Azaperone. Due to severity of the wound which appeared cancerous it was euthanized using 400mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone into jugular vein.

Masai Ostrich-Male
Injured Eye

Reported with lacrimation on the right eye. Examination was conducted and found that though lacrimating it was functional and partially cloudy. The injury was not serious to warrant darting all net capture.
They were advised to be on lookout for any complication and report immediately so that proper action can be taken


Rothschild Giraffe-Female
Lameness

Said to be lame on the right hind limb. Observation revealed skin scratch marks on the medial side of the thigh possibly caused by stump.
The lameness was not serious. They were instructed to report on any severity of the lameness

Snare

Reported with a plain snare wire around the neck dropping down three meters. The snoop was loosened and taken off the neck. There was no resultant traumatic wound
Darted with 8mgs Etorphine and 30mgs Azaperone. It was revived with 40mg Naltrexone intramuscular as it was narcotized immediately before the same was loaded into jugular vein.

Reported to be limping on the right hind limb. It had a lodged piece of pipe at fetlock. It had caused traumatic wound which was breeding and pussy. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. It was topically covered with Healing Oil and Tetracycline wound spray
Was darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. Was injected with 7500mgs Tetracycline into muscles. 150ml Pyrethrin pour on was applied topically. It was revived using 40mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein.
