Postmortem


Was found dead at the edge of the road. It was evident that it had plunged from the top of the cliff to the bottom. It broke right horn and was oozing bloody discharge from the nostrils. It died of concussion.

Stray


Reported to have been found within the thickets by villagers alone. It was suspected to have been left behind by the dam probably by failing to keep up with pace. Was collected and kept in a boma where it was collected from.
Examination revealed that it could have been left without suckle for more than three days. It had elevated temperature and had rales on auscultation. Was rated as having unfavorable prognosis. It died on the way to Naivasha Clinic where further attention could have been offered. It succumbed to pneumonia exacerbated by hunger

Postmortem

Was spotted to have died inside a farming dam. Had been pulled out of water using tractor. On examination it was found to have swollen due to setting in of decomposition process.
At mid right flank was a penetrating wound which was discharging pus after probing. It discharged plenty of gray pus. This was what formed the mind of what probably could have caused death. It was suspected to have died of a penetrating wound which could have been implicated to gunshot considering the integrity of wound and constant human-wildlife conflict complains from nearby uniformed forces.

Snare

Was spotted with partially embedded snare wire around the poll area. It was severed using wire cutter and carefully fished out of scaring wound. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. It was sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray. Healing oil was applied to keep wound supple.
Darted with 10mgs Etorphine and 100mgs Azaperone. Injected with 30000mgs Amoxycilin into muscles, 180mgs Ivermectin subcutaneous. It was revived using 30mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Traumatic Injury

Reported lame and needed vet attention. It was captured manually but carefully not to exacerbate the injury. Was lame on the right limb. Examination revealed bruised shin and swollen web area. After inquiring it was evident that injuries were sustained as during a fight with another male. It was thought to be territorial fight as they both seemed to be blooding and unfortunately there was no female. They were advised to provide females to counter boredom and supplement companionship.
The traumatized limb was thoroughly cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and iodine. Attention was paid to look for any foreign body but there was none. Prednisolone tablets 4mgs were administered orally as anti-inflamatory.

Car Knock

Reported to have been found on the marram road acting as fence line within the Estate. It was examined and found to have been electrocuted as prints were evident on the nearby electric fence
It was too weak with very faint breathing rate. It died sooner than later

Possible capture and translocation

A recce exercise was carried out by the capture team and research scientists within the entire reserve for possible reintroduction of wild animals. It was decided that zebras, buffalos, impalas and waterbucks were possible candidates. Road network within the reserve were recommended for upgrading.
Possible release sites were identified. There was a lot of cattle grazing within the reserve and they were advised to drive them out of

Traumatic Injury

It was believed to have been amputated by snare which cut through the left fore limb at fetlock joint. It was severely lame and unable to fend for itself and being vulnerable to poaching.
Darted with 6mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. Due to extent of injury it was euthanized using 4000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone.

Stray

Was reported to have invaded the sewage treatment plant causing panic and posing danger to workers within the facility and nearby Naivasha town.
A possible cause of action was discussed with Warden Naivasha and PAC team. It was decided first to try to chase it away at night fall using thunder flashes and blanks. If not successful other means were to be considered.

Snare

Spotted at water hole with a snare wire around the neck. Snare wire was plain and braided into four pieces. It was severed using wire cutter and there was no resultant wound.
Was darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Spine Injury

Reported as unable to get up and appeared abandoned at lake shore. Examination revealed that it had posterior paralyses due to lumbosacral area injury.
It was euthanized using 2000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone into jugular vein.


Zebra-Male
Fracture

Spotted seriously limping on the right fore limp. The injury was evaluated only to be diagnosed as fracture at distal tibiotarsus just under the wound. Crepitation was evident on palpation and manipulation.
Darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. It was euthanized using 4000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone intravenously.

Lake Nakuru National Park
Black Rhino-Male
Gunshot Wound

Had been reported to be lame on the left fore limb suspected to had sustained gunshot wound after the same was heard the previous night. Examination revealed that the projectile fractured mid scapular and led to the opposite side. Due to extent of the injury and poachers threat a decision to put it down was reached. Postmortem followed the track which penetrated chest cavity puncturing the ventral portions of the left and right lung after which it settled just anterior to the right cervical muscles where it was recovered.
Was darted using 3.5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. Got immobilized on sternal recumbence after seven minutes. Anaesthesia plain was lighted up using 10mgs Butophanol intravenously. Was euthanized with 20000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone

2 Hippos
Postmortem

In one instance was a hippo which died while enroute to the lake from dry land along the muddy path. It was thought that the said hippo got stuck at sticky mud and there was no quick rescue and ended dying.
The other one was a little calf which died on dry land. Examination revealed a point of injury on the fore head as depicted also by presence of stones thought to have been used to hit it.

Snare
Reported limping on left hind limb. It had a circular wound on distal metatarsus making the distal portion of the limb swollen. It was examined and found to have a plastic rubber lodged within the injury and a metal wire knot was attached at one location. It was severed using wire cutter. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Healing Oil was applied topically after tetracycline wound spray.
Immobilized using 7mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. It was injected with 30000mgs Amoxycilin and 100ml Multivitamin intramuscularly and 250mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously. Pyrethrin pour on was applied to cover against the ticks. It was immediately revived after being tripped down using ropes with 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Red Water-Babesiosis



Was spotted urinating Reddish urine. It was in a bachelor herd of other seven buffalos. Injected with 15000mgs Tetracycline and 100ml Multivitamin intramuscularly. 120mgs Ivermectin was injected subcutaneously.
Sedated using 10mgs Etorphine and 120mgs Azaperone. It was revived using 30mgs Diprenorphine intravenous.

Snare

Spotted limping on the left hind limb. Examination revealed that a piece of plastic pipe had lodged around the fetlock area. It had caused wound around the cicatrized area. The plastic was severed using wire cutter. Resultant wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. It was sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray and topically covered with healing oil
Immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 20mgs Medetomidine. It was injected with 4500mgs Tetracycline and 40ml Multivitamin intramuscularly plus 80mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine and 31mgs Yohimbine into jugular vein.

Traumatic Injury

Was reported to have a longitudinal wound on the left gluteal area. It was bleeding and about five days old. Was refreshened by debridement and cleaned with Hydrogen peroxide and iodine. Few maggots which had struck were physically removed. Wound was flushed with Ivermectin. Dead space was difficult to reduce due to muscle dehiscence. Due to the tension of the wound edges interrupted mattress suture was placed at the centre to help appose the edges. The rest of sutures were either simple interrupted.
Darted with 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. 3000mgs Amoxycilin was infiltrated into suture line and similar was injected at two sites on opposite wound sides. 30000mgs Amoxycilin and 70ml Multivitamin was injected intramuscularly, 60mgs Ivermectin was injected subcutaneously. During the exercise the patient was on right lateral recumbence and temperature was controlled by dowsing liberally with water at interval of ten minutes. The surgery lasted for about thirty five minutes. The animal was light before reversal as there was tail reflex. It was reversed with 75mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein.

Reported with a plain wire snare around the neck dropping down five meters to the ground. The snoop was loosened and taken off the neck. Pyrethrin pour on was applied topically to cover against ticks
Sedated with 10mgs Etorphine and 100mgs Azaperone. There was no resultant wound from the snare. It was revived using 30mgs Diprenorphine intravenously


Zebra-Male
Tumor

Noted with a bleeding cauliflower like swelling posterior to scrotum. It was about 10cms in diameter with raw bleeding ulcerations.
Darted with 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. Due to severity of the tumor and bleeding associated with it was Euthanized using 4000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone.


Buffalo Calf-Male
Lethargy

Seen accompanying its dam but emaciated and diarrhea. It was dewormed with 30mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously and covered with antibiotic 3000mgs Tetracycline and 20mls Multivitamin intramuscularly. Pyrethrin pour on was applied.
It was wrestled manually down and received boosters

Lassitude

Was found lying at the edge of the road.  It was examined and found that it was too weak to stand due to emaciation. It was boosted with 30ml Multivitamin, 6000mgs Tetracycline both into muscles, 30mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously and 100ml Pyrethrin pour on.
It was manually handled during the whole treatment after which it was placed in the nearby thickets.

Lake Nakuru National Park
White Rhino-Male
Postmortem

Reportedly found dead with both horns missing. Was found on right lateral recumbence. A penetrating wound was found on the left scapular leading posteriorly diagonally to the right. It was traced and penetrated through chest cavity left lung lobe, left atrium, right lung lobe, diaphragm, liver, ventral right colon, visceral surface of the spleen longitudinally and settled at inguinal area where it was discovered.
The rhino succumbed to heavy internal bleeding which was witnessed as hemothorax and hemoperitonium. There was a lot of tissue necrosis and gangrene through the track of the bullet.

Reported with a plain wire snare on the left hind metatarsus. Had caused swelling due to struggling as it tried to break the snare. It was severely lame and there was slight skin abrasion. It was sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray
Darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein. Was injected with 50ml Multivitamin and 30000mgs Amoxycilin into the muscles. Pour on was applied topically

Nini Farm
Syke Monkey
Stray

Reported to have invaded residential area from unknown location. It caused fear and panic as it did not fear people or dogs and wanted to gain entry into the houses. It seemed to have been habituated.
It was darted with 600mgs Ketamine in three darts one after the other until it was fully immobilized on the ground after getting down trees. It was taken to Naivasha Vet Clinic For observation and possible release.

Traumatic injury

Spotted being lame on the right fore limb. Examination revealed a wound near the sternum which was open and about seven centimeters deep. It was granulating and discharging gray pus. It was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Ivermectin 100mgs followed by 15000mgs Amoxycilin was used to flush it. Liberally it was sprayed by Tetracycline wound spray.
Immobilized using 10mgs Etorphine and 100mgs Azaperone. 30000mgs Amoxycilin; 100ml Multivitamin intramuscular and 250mgs ivermectin subcutaneously were administered. Pyrethrin was applied as pour on to cover against ticks. It was revived using 75mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein

Spotted with braided plain wire snare around the neck. It had caused traumatic wound on right side of the neck. The dropping pieces were causing friction on the fore limbs leading to abrasions. Snare wire snoop was loosened and taken off the neck. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and iodine. It was sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray.
Sedated using 6mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. It was injected with 15000mgs Tetracycline and 50ml Multivitamin intramuscularly and 80mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously. Pyrethrin pour on was used against ticks. It was reversed using 18mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Traumatic Injury

Reported wobbling before getting stuck near a fence. Examination revealed abrasions on the face after it was removed from the entanglement near the fence. It was reversed to judge the response. It was evident that it had suffered head injury resulting to ataxia and seizures
It was immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine by hand injection. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine. It was euthanized using 4000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone.

Lake Nakuru National Park
Lion
Stray

Was reported outside the park at Free Area. Was found lying down under the thicket. The same has been a habitual fence breaker and had previously been reported to have predated on three donkeys at different times. It ran away before being fully immobilized and attempted to get back to the park
Darted with 200mgs Ketamine and 4mgs Medetomidine. It was captured and put into the cage. It was revived after an hour with 62.5mgs Yohimbine. It was up in eight minutes and was fully aware of surrounding in thirteen minutes. It was to be decided where to be released with possible release site being Aberdare or Meru National Parks.

Snare

Spotted with a wedge wire around the right fore fetlock area extending about four meters behind keeping on entangling the hind limbs thus interfering with ambulation. It was barely tight but had caused swelling of the snared limb. Snoop was loosened and taken off the limb.
Immobilized using 9mgs Etorphine and 30mgs Azaperone. It was revived immediately it was casted down by ropes with 75mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein.

Having been chased using thunder flashes and blanks, it was reported to have come back after three days invading sewer tanks posing danger to workers and surrounding residents.
Consultations are on high gear on possible euthanasia and disposal away from the residents who would possibly feed on the carcass.

Traumatic Wound treatment (Review)

Had been treated one week earlier and needed review. The apposition seemingly was ok except little discharge noted at drainage canal. It was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Amoxicillin 30000mgs was infiltrated into suture line and Tetracycline wound spray liberally applied. Healing oil was applied to keep wound edges sapple.
It was immobilized using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine intravenously.

Was reported to have a plain wire around the neck barely tight resulting to alopecia. The wire snoop was loosened and taken off the neck.
Darted with 6mgs Etorphine and 70mgs Azaperone. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Old age Syndrome-Postmortem

Was spotted at the edge of the road dead. Had emaciated greatly. It had worn out teeth to the level of gum. Old age was depicted by lack of mane and sunken supraorbital fossa.

4 Zebras-2 males & 2 Female
2 Snares & 2 Traumatic injuries
Snares-one on right fore and other on left behind,
Injury-One on left behind limb and other amputated on right hind.




The two snared had tight wedge wire at fetlocks causing scaring wounds with a lot of pain depicted by failure to use limbs affected. The amputated spent most of the time lying down due to pain. The injured had snare which released on its own but healed by contracture causing a swelling on lateroposterior of the affected area. The scar was searched for any embedded snare wire but there was none.

All were darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone each. All wounds were cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Each was topically covered with healing oil and Tetracycline wound spray. 2 were covered with each 30000mgs Amoxicillin and others with 15000mgs Tetracycline plus 50ml Multivitamin each into muscles. Each also received 80mgs subcutaneously of Ivermectin and 200ml Pyrethrin as pour on. Each was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Rescued

Was reported to have hit electric wire near Rutuba Primary School making it unable to fly. Had injury on left leg. It had been bandaged and it was kept warm ready to be examined later
It was delivered to Owl Sanctuary at Karagita for observation, treatment and later release back to the wild.

Handing over

The bird was examined after debandaging. It was established that it had a fracture near the hock joint. Four splints were used to immobilize the fracture after cotton wool padding. Bandage was used to hold splints in place.
It was then handed over to the sanctuary for upkeep and rehabilitation.

Snare

Found lying down only to depict a wedge snare wire on the right fetlock joint. It was tight causing swinging leg lameness. Snoop was loosened and taken off the leg. Resultant wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and iodine. It was sprayed with Tetracycline spray and smeared with healing oil.
Was darted using 6mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. It was injected with 15000mgs Tetracycline and 50ml Multivitamin into muscles. 80mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously and covered with 200ml Pyrethrin against ticks. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Heart beast-Male
Fracture

Spotted with swinging leg lameness on left forelimb. It had fractured at mid metacarpus. Had been thought to have been due to fighting.
Darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Xylazine. It was euthanized using 4000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone into jugular vein

Lake Olbolosat
Hippo-Male
Postmortem

Reported to have died on the shore of the lake. It was found on left lateral recumbence. Had several raw skin scratches. It had rotten wounds on left upper scapular and right lump near the tail base.
Postmortem revealed that it had a fracture on the upper left scapular with gangrene within surrounding tissues and same for the injured right lump. The animal died of septicemia following the injuries inflicted by counter parts without ruling out human involvement
