Snare
Reported severely lame on the right fore limb caused by a traumatic wedge snare wire at fetlock. Snoop was loosened and taken off the limb. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine. Wound was liberally sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray
Darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. It was covered with 15000mgs Tetracycline and 50ml Multivitamin into muscles. Subcutaneously it was injected with 8mgs Ivermectin and topically covered with 200ml Pyrethrin. It was revived using 40mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein.

Postmortem


It was found dead near the house. External examination revealed emaciation and dehydration, pale mucus membrane and heavy ecto- parasites. This has been a problem within the conservancy especially during dry periods.
The heavy tick load has been demonstrated to cause even traumatic myasis. The administration has been advised to introduce cattle to graze and collect ticks and with good dipping system the tick population will be manageable

Was reported dead in the trench. The trench had been dug to control their entry into residential compound. Unfortunately the hippo ended up being trapped by acacia roots which were running across the trench.
The carcass was removed by tractor and owner of the house instructed to widen the trench and severe the roots. The trench has a shallow end where the hippos can climb out of the trench. Inspection will be done on the same.

Reported with a wedge snare wire around the right hind metatarsus. It was tight though there was no resultant traumatic wound. The snoop was loosened and taken off the limb.
Darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 40mgs Azaperone. It was roped down after showing star gazing. It was immediately revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein and released quickly after showing signs of regurgitation.

Rescue/Capture and Translocation


Reported to have strayed into residential compound. The owner of the compound had managed to rope it. Initially it had been roped on left hind metatarsus and then on lower fore left radial area. All had resulted to traumatic wounds. Then they had roped around the neck. All wounds were cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine followed by tetracycline spray topically
Was darted using 5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. Was quickly loaded into pick-up and placed on sternum and blindfolded. 3000mgs Amoxicillin and 50mls Multivitamin was injected into muscles. It was driven 40kms to Kigio Wildlife conservancy where it was released successfully. It was revived using 40mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein.

The rogue buffalo was reported to have instilled fear posing a danger to the premise visitors. The area was recced for possible capture and translocation.
An ambush was laid over night but the animal never surfaced. The owner of the premise was instructed to clear the bush around the tents and houses to discourage the animal seeking shelter.

The animals were reported to have invaded the farm through the faulty fence line. This is due to the prevailing dry period and lack of foliage. The fence got faulty after pulsator developed mechanical problem.
The owner of the farm was instructed to electrify the fence as before so that the animals can then be driven out of the farm.

Reported with a plain braided snare wire around the neck. It was strangulating. It was severed using wire cutter. There was no resultant traumatic wound.
Darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. It was loaded into a pick up and driven into Kigio Wildlife Conservancy about 800m where it was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine.

Reported to have stalked goats that were browsing in the field. The shepherds had started stoning it but it was quickly rescued before it was badly hurt.
They were advised to be reporting such cases instead of killing the candidates so that they can be captured and released into protected areas. It was released in Hells Gate National Park

The hyena had posed threat and conflict with the owner of the island by predating on sheep. It was trapped using cage trap and transported by a pick-up.
It was released in Hells Gate National Park. Monitoring will continue to establish whether it will go back to the island

Had been spotted with a plastic lodged around the left hind limb at metatarsus. It had caused friction as animal ambulated resulting to traumatic wound. It was severed using wire cutter. Wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine and covered liberally with Tetracycline wound spray.
Immobilized using 5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. It was injected with 3000mgs Amoxicillin and 50ml Multivitamin into muscles. It was topically covered with 200ml Pyrethrin and 8mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein

Spotted with a wedge snare wire around the left fore limb fetlock. Snoop was loosened and taken off the limb. Resultant wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine late sprayed with Tetracycline
Immobilized using 5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. Was injected with 15000mls Tetracycline and 50mls Multivitamin intramuscularly. 200mls Pyrethrin was topically applied followed by 8mgs Ivermectin under the skin. Was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine intravenously.

Repotted with a wedge snare wire around left fore limb fetlock. The snoop was loosened and taken off the limb. Resultant wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine and topically sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray.
Immobilized with 5mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. It was injected with 30000mgs Amoxicillin and 50mls Multivitamin into muscles. 200mls Pyrethrin was poured on skin and 8mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously administered. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein

Spotted with amputated left limb fetlock around which wedge wire was attached on the bone. The bone was exposed and the soft tissue edges were raw and bleeding.
It was darted with 3mgs Etorphine and 40mgs Azaperone. It was euthanized to reduce suffering using 2000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone into jugular vein.

Reported with a wedge snare around left fore limb fetlock causing severe traumatic wound. Snoop was loosened and taken off the limb. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine and sprayed with tetracycline wound spray.
Darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. Was covered with 15000ml Tetracycline and 50ml Multivitamin. Topically it was covered with 200ml Pyrethrin and subcutaneously with 8mgs Ivermectin. It was revived using 18mgs Diprenorphine into the vein.

Trapped/Snared


The impala was at the road reserve of Naivasha Nakuru Road. It was startled by an on-coming vehicle and ran into the wire mess used as fence. It was entangled.
It was reported immediately and we were nearby. We entrapped it and released inside Marula Estate after establishing it was not injured or fractured. It ran into the bush

Lassitude/Postmortem


Was reported emaciated. Examination revealed pale mucus membrane.  Due to poor anesthetic status it succumbed after three minutes while under examination. Postmortem revealed depleted fatty tissues especially omentum and coronary fat. This shows poor nutrition/hunger. Spleen was fibrotic and very thin showing lack of blood
Darted using 3mgs Etorphine and 40mgs Azaperone. Liver surface was riddled with gray nodules depicting encapsulated worms. Cysts of various sizes were evident on membranous omentum. Round worms were evident on the mucosa of abomasum and cecum resulting to hemorrhages and diapedesis. Tentatively cause of death is cardiorespiratory embarrassment

A recce was carried out concerning complain of reedbucks that has invaded horticultural farm. It was established they are destroying crops. 6 were spotted on barley fields during the day.
An evening recce will be done so that they can be seen as they emerge from the bush. A decision will be after the evening recce and device away forward.

Spotted with a swollen neck due to wedge snare wire traumatic wound. Snoop was loosened and taken off the neck. Wound was cleaned with Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine later sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray.
Darted using 5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. 15000mgs Tetracycline and 50mls Multivitamin were injected into muscles, 8mgs Ivermectin subcutaneous and 200ml Pyrethrin topically on skin. Was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into vein.

Conflict/Recce-Night

The Mara Farm was visited at night to assess the invasion of reedbuck into horticulture fields. They were found browsing on French beans and Barley fields.
An attempt to drive them out of the farm fields will be done after which capture and translocation will be attempted.

Reported with a snare wire at distal left radius causing lameness. It was severed using wire cutter. It had not caused traumatic wound
Darted using 12mgs Etorphine and 40mgs Azaperone. It was revived using 40mgs Naltrexone into jugular vein

Reported unable to get up over 10 hours. It appeared emaciated and relatively old. It could not get up even when assisted.
It was euthanized using 40000mgs of Sodium Pentobarbitone into jugular vein. It was disposed into deep pit away from humans.

The calf was discovered within the bush tentatively after twenty four hours after birth. It was cold and with frothy discharge from nostrils. Efforts to rescue were futile after it passed on on its way to nursery. Its dam was discovered within the same region possibly died during or after calving down.

The two orphans looked after in the Unit revisited after successful release into the wild for over a year. They grazed within the Unit for two days before they left back into the wild.
During the visit they were dewormed using 5mgs Ivermectin subcutaneously and received 200ml Pyrethrin as pour on.

Theory class was attended together with participants from African countries. All discussions and training were geared to management of scene of crime so as to gather as much forensic
Evidence as possible leading to convincing and successful prosecution of perpetrators of wildlife crimes.

He came for short attachment within Naivasha aboard Naivasha Mobile Vet Unit. This was his first day as he attended to a snared Female zebra.

Wildlife Forensic Workshop
Practicals


The practical was offered within the bushy area of the Institute with a zebra as a specimen. The female zebra was picked from Aquila after being amputated on the right fore limb by the snare resulting to myelitis.
It was euthanized before being shot for demonstration purposes. Scene of crime was set and workshop attendants from African countries were taken through by world known wildlife forensic expert Dr. Potter from South Africa.

Postmortem


Had been treated for gunshot wound twice late last year. The wound closed up but later it succumbed after about three months. Postmortem revealed degeneration and necrotic of soft tissue as bullet track was traced from entry point at mid left thoracic cavity towards neck
. The bullet traversed through thoracic muscles, medial to left scapulo-humeral joint, through lateral wings of cervical vertebrae number four and three causing them to fracture before settling at nearby cervical muscles in four fragments. The fragments were all encapsulated.

Reported with a snare around left fore fetlock. It had not caused any traumatic wound. It depicted emaciation necessitating administration of boosters. 15000mgs Tetracycline and 50ml Multivitamin were given into muscles.
Darted with 5mgs Etorphine and 60mgs Azaperone. 200ml Pyrethrin was applied topically. It was revived using 24mgs Diprenorphine into jugular vein.

Internship hands on as he tries to dart a snared zebra. He demonstrated competent skills by successfully darting on foot.  He was on training for three days as from 29/01/2015.
He was cooperative and hard working.

Car Knock


Foal was found lying close to edge of the road dead. Examination revealed it had been hit by a blunt object at left lump causing femur fracture. Recceing the nearby bush yielded a dead female which was the dam of the foal.
Examination revealed point of contusion abrasion at withers. Both deaths were suspected to have been caused by vehicle as both tried to close the tarmac road. These incidences will be resolved soon as fencing of that area is underway.

Noted lame on left hind limb caused by embedded plain wire at fetlock joint. Wire was severed using wire cutter. Wound was cleaned using Hydrogen Peroxide and Iodine then sprayed with Tetracycline wound spray.
Immobilized using 5mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. Was injected with 15000mgs Tetracycline and 50ml Multivitamin into muscles. 200ml Pyrethrin was applied topically. It was reversed using 18mgs Diprenorphine intravenously.

Reported drooling as a result of protruding tongue. Examination revealed it suffered from contusion probably by ramming onto blunt object by the head. Tongue had a bite wound, left cheek had remnants of red colour and mid neck ventrally had seroma.
Darted using 4mgs Etorphine and 50mgs Azaperone. Was euthanized using 40000mgs Sodium Pentobarbitone into jugular vein.

Noted lying down more often and sluggishly getting up when urged to. The right hind limb had been desnared previously and had overgrown hoof while the left fore limb had overreaching wounds at level of fetlock posteriorly. Hoof was  trimmed and wound cleaned with Hydrogen peroxide and Iodine.
Darted using 3mgs Etorphine and 40mgs Azaperone. It was boosted with 30000mgs Amoxicillin and 50ml Multivitamin into muscles. 8mgs Ivermectin was administered subcutaneously and 200ml Pyrethrin topically. It was revived using 12mgs Diprenorphine into vein.
